Ethereum (ETH) developers chose April 12 as the target date for releasing the landmark Shanghai upgrade during the 156th Execution Layer call.

Project coordinator Tim Beiko said the developers will provide a client release within a week. The devs also plan to make a full announcement about Shanghai’s deployment on the mainnet in 10 days.

The developers also discussed the EIPs proposed for Cancun, the next major update scheduled after Shanghai’s release. The removal of the “SELFDESTRUCT” opcode was a major part of this discussion, with Beiko tweeting,

“We've officially deprecated it as part of Shanghai, and if we want to consider the transition to Verkle Tries in the fork after Cancun, then SELFDESTRUCT needs to be modified in Cancun.”

Ethereum developers deployed the Shapella hard fork on the Goerli testnet earlier this week. The aim of this update was to allow validators to test their setups before the Shanghai upgrade goes live on the mainnet.

Although the upgrade allowed withdrawals to be processed on the Goerli testnet, its implementation was slower than expected due to lackluster participation from validators.
